Originally developed as a reconnaissance telescope by the #NationalReconnaissanceOffice, the observatory features a field of view roughly 100 times larger than the #HubbleSpaceTelescope while maintaining comparable optical sharpness. The telescope will spend its five-year mission at a distant Lagrange point surveying millions of stars, studying exploding Type Ia supernovas to measure #DarkEnergy, and discovering distant planets via gravitational microlensing. Additionally, the spacecraft utilizes an onboard coronagraph instrument designed to block starlight and directly image exoplanets orbiting nearby stars.
